House of Shadows
Nestled within the arid landscape of Sangli, Maharashtra the House of Dynamic Shadows, a unique creation by Ar. Milind Kulkarni & Mrudal Kulkarni, is a testament of the enchanting
combination of nature, light, and context.
Taking into consideration the site’s dimensions and the region’s hot and dry climate, the house is meticulously designed on a rectangular grid, incorporating both internal and external landscape patches.
The true gem of this residence resides within an indoor landscape area serving as the central activity hub. It offers framed views from multiple vantage points, including the family room, study, and guest bedroom. Here natural light gracefully filters through pergolas and terracotta jail frames, casting a sun-kissed aura that heralds the beginning of each day. The deliberate arrangement of expansive glazed areas, shielded from excessive heat by elevation boxes rather than solid walls, reflects a conscious effort to establish transparency, connectivity, and a sense of unity with the surrounding landscape.
Embracing the distinct aesthetics of the architect, the material palette features terracotta tiles, wooden flooring, raw concrete texture, and Kota stone.
The vibrant Bougainville plantation enhances the beauty of the patio; strategically placed cutouts and shaded elevation boxes enhance the aesthetics and functionality of the facade. The predominantly grey, and yellow exterior, utilising terracotta tiles, finds its reflection in the elevational boxes strategically positioned to shade specific parts of the bungalow.
The house of dynamic shadows exemplifies the art of connected living, offering its occupants a haven of solace and an inspiring place for creativity and contemplation.
